55 test positive for COVID-19 at Accra Girls’ SHS – Officials

Fifty-five out of 314 test samples taken from students and teachers of the Accra Girls’ Senior High School have returned positive for COVID-19, a joint statement by education and health authorities confirmed.

Accra Girls’ Senior High School is among the list of schools that have recorded cases of the virus two weeks after the government reopened schools for final year students after spending close to three months at home following the outbreak of the virus.

There was growing tension in the school amid calls for pre-tertiary institutions to shutdown. The opposition National Democratic Congress has also joined calls for schools to be closed down to prevent any further outbreak of the virus in schools.

Actions taken so far at Accra Girls’ SHS

In the joint statement, however, health and education authorities said they are deeply concerned about the development and have outlined a number of measures to protect the lives of students.

Government has also outlined some actions taken so far as part of measures to control the spread.

These include identification and segregation of contacts from other students, restriction of the number of students that attend dining at a particular time, enforcement of social distancing protocols, enhanced hand hygiene practices among others.

The statement further disclosed that “a few other schools have reported sporadic cases which have not experience a surge.”

It further explained that similar measures are being implemented in the respective institutions to prevent the spread of the virus in senior high schools across the country.
