The Asokore-Mampong Housing Project in the Ashanti Region has been named after Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made the announcement at the opening of the affordable housing project on Thursday, 6 November 2020, as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.
The president applauded the decision to name the Asokore-Mampong Housing Unit after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, describing it as “an excellent decision”.
The project was started with the objective of providing accommodation for low- to middle-income workers, and also to build the capacity of local contractors, among others.
However, upon the assumption of office of the Mills/Mahama administration in 2009, the project stalled.
In 2017, the new Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), under the Chairmanship of Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor, took steps to fast-track the completion of the then-abandoned project, in line with the president’s commitment to providing affordable housing for Ghanaians.
The Board, subsequently approved a total amount of GHS256,972,988.04 to SSNIT to complete the project within two years.
The Osei Tutu II Housing Estate is made up of 1,053 units (91 blocks), comprising 26 shops, 336 one-bedroom units and 691 two-bedroom units.
All the blocks have been named with Adinkra symbols to reflect the culture and traditions of Asantes.
