INTRODUCTION

We just heard one of the many ‘miracle’ stories in the Bible – about Jesus’ ability to heal those with afflictions. Our story today unfolds as Jesus and his disciples are walking through Jerusalem. They see a man who is blind, in fact, blind from birth.

It was the common understanding of that time that when illness occurred, it was God’s way of punishing people for their sin. So we are not surprised to hear Jesus’ disciples say, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? (John 9:2).

Jesus immediately clears this up for us by saying that this has nothing to do with sin in this man’s life or his parent’s. God is not punishing them; God is not angry with them. Jesus solidly states that the concept of ‘original sin’ is a construct of man, not God. Every day God shows His love and pours out His blessings to all His children.

BODY

A. THE MISERY OF THE BLIND MAN

a. His Blindness – This man, according to the Scripture was born blind. This would be one of the most horrible of physical handicaps. To never see a sunset, the face of a child, the face of a loved one would be a terrible thing.

Yet, this man had lived his entire life in this state.

b. His Birth – The Scriptures seem to indicate that this man was born not only handicapped, but also in poverty. However, we find that Jesus felt otherwise.

He tells the Disciples that this man’s handicap was allowed by God so that God could get glory from this man’s life.

c. His Begging – This man was unable to find employment and as a result he was reduced to begging for what food and money he received. This Is A Picture Of Absolute Poverty.

B. A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLINDNESS

There are two kinds of blindness in the story.

▪One is of the man who was born with a physical defect of blindness.

▪The second is of the religious folk who had a Spiritual Defect and were spiritually blind.

The lesson tells us that spiritual blindness is far worse than physical blindness. PHYSICAL blindness can be HEALED, but SPIRITUAL blindness RESISTS healing.

The real point of this story is spiritual blindness. . . the spiritual blindness of the Pharisees, as well as the spiritual blindness of each one of us.

Spiritual blindness is a serious condition, a condition that leads to spiritual death.

C. THE MINISTRY OF A SOVEREIGN MASTER

A. He Was Exposed To The Light- When Jesus passed by, this man’s life was forever changed. Jesus, first, healed him of his physical handicap. After Jesus exposed the man to the physical light, he began to lead him through a series of events that brought him face to face with who Jesus really is.

D. THE MESSAGE OF A SUPERNATURAL MIRACLE

A. Jesus Is A SHINING Light – When He walked upon this earth, Jesus was in the business of delivering men from darkness. May I say that He is still doing that today? If you have never been saved, you can come to Jesus today and He will bring you out of the darkness and the bondage in which you find yourself. He is still a Shining Light and a Savior to all who will come to Him – Matt. 11:28; Rev. 22:17.

B. Jesus Is A SEEKING Light – After this man had been cast out by the Jews, Jesus went looking for Him. This is why He came – Luke 19:10.

C. Jesus Is A SAVING Light – When this man bowed and received Jesus, I am sure that he forgot about the days of blindness and the pain of being removed from the Synagogue. When he called on the name of Jesus, He was eternally saved and received into a family from which he will never be removed!

E. APPLICATION

Jesus came to give sight to the spiritually blind.

▪Jesus takes the initiative by seeking those who are blind.

▪Jesus alone has the power to open blind eyes.

▪To move from spiritual blindness to sight, admit that you’re blind.

▪To move from spiritual blindness to sight, believe in Jesus for who He is.

▪When you truly believe in Jesus, you gain spiritual sight, confess Jesus as Lord, and bow before Him in worship.

▪Let us therefore WALK AS CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT.

▪As Children of the light WE ARE CHARACTERIZED by the  “fruit of the Spirit”. In Ephesians 5 Paul saw this in three ways.

•  It is seen in Goodness

•  It is seen in Righteousness

•  It is seen in Truth

 –   “Goodness” deals with our relationship with others.

–   “Righteousness” deals with our relationship with God.

–   “Truth” deals with the personal integrity of our own lives.

The church needs to heed that today!

CONCLUSION

This man never expected that he would be healed and saved when he got up that morning. I am sure that he planned to live that day like everyday before in the blackness of darkness. He did not realize that there was a man named Jesus who will drive the darkness forever away from his life. Many are in that same shape today! They are lost and in the depths of great spiritual darkness and they do not even realize that Jesus can set them free forever. If they do understand this, they feel that it is something for others and not for themselves. Allow me to remind you this morning that Jesus loves all men just as they are and that He will save anyone who will come to Him by simply faith. ENJOY THE SERVICE. Stay BLESSED.
