Gov’t Employs 93,724 Teachers

The Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has stated that some 93,724 teachers have been employed by government.

He made this known while speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize held at University of Cape Coast.

He revealed that all teachers from the Colleges of Education who have passed their Licensure and done with their National Service have been automatically employed by GES.

He further stated that even those who had trailed in some papers due to several reasons also got the opportunity to be employed this year.

“All teachers of the 2019 batch, who have taken the National Service and passed the Licensure are being processed for automatically employed now” he added.

In a radio interview, the PRO of the Ministry of Education Mr. Kwasi Obeng-Fosu confirmed the information and explained that even the 2017/2018 batch that came picketing at the premises of GES/MOE were the first to be considered for employment few months ago.

On the issue of distance and graduate teachers, He quoted his Minister by saying, about 6,000 graduate teachers from the various universities will also be given employment opportunity after GES has completed that of the 2019 CoE batch.

Mr. Obeng-Fosu touted the achievements of the ministry with regards to their records on teacher employment by stating that over 93,700 teachers will be employed by the end of the ongoing recruitment.

He gave the statistics as follows:

Recruitment

2017- 2018 Academic Year
Limited recruitment = 19,640
Newly trained = 14,170
Total = 33,810

2018- 2019 Academic Year
1. Double Track Teaching staff = 8,872
2. Non teaching staff for Double Track = 1,445
3. Newly Trained Teachers = 14,500
Total = 24,817

Grand Total for the academic years 2017-2019
( 33,810 + 24,817 )
= 58,627

2020
GES/YEA- kitchen staff and security for DT schools =7,730

GES 2020 (pending) 27, 367

Grand Total 93,724

He expressed government’s commitment to raise the credibility and to professionalize the teaching job to meet world standards as well as produce the best teachers to prepare our future leaders to acquire the right skills and expertise for the development of our Great nation Ghana and the world as a whole.
