GPL 2020/2021 MATCH DAY 12 PREVIEWS

Sports

GREAT OLYMPICS vs KING FAISAL

The team on song and with the bragging rights of the capital city will host another buoyed team in the shape of the comeback record holders, King Faisal. Olympics put their tense encounter against Hearts of Oak to bed by the end of the first half. King Faisal present a different prospect and have nothing to lose. The consistency of Yaw Preko’s men will be tested heavily today and it will be disappointing to succumb to the team at the nether regions of the league table after beating no mean a rival like Hearts of Oak.

Coach Andy Sinason has masterminded arguably the greatest comeback in the GPL after lifting his team’s spirit at halftime. They went down by 3-0 and pulled one back before the break. Hattrick hero Kwame Peprah was at his perilous best after the team talk. He is gradually staking a claim to be the toast of the Kumasi-based team. Hopefully, King Faisal should be able to hold on to him when the transfer window is opened on February 16.

BEREKUM CHELSEA vs BECHEM UNITED

The struggle for Berekum Chelsea continues in the GPL, as they host close neighbors Bechem United in match week 12. Chelsea blew a 3-0 lead at half time against King Faisal to lose 4-3 at full time, leaving fans extremely disappointed. They have only managed to amass 4 points from a possible 15, from their last five games played and pressure is mounting on Coach Odamten and his boys to deliver the desired results in this fixture. His job will be on the line if he fails to win. Much cannot be said of their home grounds that was most feared by visiting teams this season because they have only won twice at home.

Bechem United on the other hand will be searching for a second win in a row to boost their confidence in their quest to fiercely contest for the league title. Their poor run of results ended with a solid win against Eleven Wonders in their previous game. They have been poor in their away matches, winning only once. Coach Danso and his boys can take advantage of the struggles of their opponents, to snatch a point or go on to win. They need a different approach and mentality if indeed they intend to do that. A win means they can take a 1-point lead at the top of the table if leaders Karela United fail to win in their game.

DREAMS FC vs WAFA

This match is highly anticipated and promises some great degree of excitement due to the forms of both teams. Dreams FC stands as one of the teams with an encouraging form over the past five games. They were able to secure a 2-2 draw against the fearsome Elmina Sharks away from home. The nature of their comeback in Elmina proved that they were poised to take home some points. In this game also, the likes of Sulemana Fahadu, who got the last equalizing goal will be needed to take much of the responsibility off the shoulders of more established players like Joseph Esso.

WAFA are fresh from their annual mauling of teams at their Sogakope base. Liberty was the sacrificial lamb this time. That magnificent result has pushed them into third position with a healthy goal difference of +7 goals, only bettered by league leaders, Karela. Their away form is not as emphatic as their home form but any opponent worth his salt will not consider them as push overs. Top scorer Daniel Lomotey is not to be missed as the likes of Konadu Yiadom and Augusting Boakye seem to have taken up the mantle of scoring and providing chances.

EBUSUA DWARFS vs ASHGOLD

Dwarfs have been one of the most inconsistent teams this season. Their chequered story this season includes draws against Olympics and Aduana, and victories against Accra-based sides Legon Cities and Liberty Professionals in Accra. That makes them an unpredictable prospect against a tough Ashgold side. Coach Ernest Thompson’s side need to dig deep against the miners and work on correcting the adverse goal difference they have currently (scored 11, conceded 14).

The miners held their own against the porcupine warriors when the latter was welcomed to the Len Clay Stadium in their match day 11 fixture. Luck was on their side in terms of defence, as Kotoko missed about five gilt-edged chances. Despite their performance against Kotoko, the miners are capable of leaking goals as we witnessed against Legon Cities. Therein lies the doorway for Dwarfs to pounce but the one-time league leader will be looking to drag themselves back to the top of the table with at least one point from Cape Coast.

LIBERTY PROFESSIONALS vs ADUANA STARS

Coming off the back of a humiliating defeat in Sogakope, shipping in 5 goals, Liberty professionals will be in dire need of all 3 points to save their 22 years of topflight football from spelling doom. No less, a run of 4 straight defeats, including 1 win in 6 and conceding 9 goals in the last 2 games, has seen them drop to 17th, rooted in the relegation zone. The Dansoman based boys’ form may not be great, but at home (Carl Reindorf Park), they have collected 8 points from a possible 15 equivalent to 80% of their total points this season. They battle Aduana stars at the said venue in matchday 11, who themselves also conceded 5 in this same fixture in the truncated league. Aside this, Liberty Professionals even with their downhill form will also take inspiration from scoring a goal in all their 5 home matches this season. Young center back Paul Kwame will serve his one game suspension after seeing red at WAFA last time out.

The Ogya boys are in great form, winning 3 of their last 5, especially after that surprising win over Kotoko away from home. Indeed, coach Paa Kwasi Fabin’s years of Ghana football experience has sparked up Aduana Stars as they have shown glimpses of their title winning season in recent games. 5th on the table with 3 wins in 5. Veteran and prolific forward Yahaya Mohammed has found some form with 3 goals in his last 5 outings, totaling 6 for the season.  Bright Adjei and Obed Bioh have also been engines to Aduana’s steady rise. Playing away from home has been their nemesis, winning just once and accompanied by a solitary clean sheet. Away at Dansoman will be no easy feat after being whitewashed in their last visit.

ASANTE KOTOKO vs INTER ALLIES

Another encounter in Accra will pith Asante Kotoko against Inter Allies. The former’s profligacy cost them maximum points when they met with their regional rival Ashgold in the match day 11 fixture. Playing at their adopted home will give them some comfort to grab all points against current bottom side, Inter Allies. A loss and draw are the last two results for Coach Johnson Smith’s title contenders. A win is what they and their fans anticipate. Conversion of their chances will convert that ambition to reality.

Inter Allies have not had any good outings, luck, or points in their last four games. Four straight defeats underscore their form currently, with the last one coming against fellow Accra based Legon Cities. Against Kotoko, they will be pressured to sit deep and quell the attacks of Kotoko. If they can fend off those attacks and employ some counter attacking strategy, they stand a better chance of getting something out of the game.

ELEVEN WONDERS vs ELMINA SHARKS

Eleven Wonders succumbed to defeat in their last fixture against Bechem United by 3 goals to 1. What started out as an exciting encounter ended up with some unpalatable scenes with Coach Ignatius Fosu captured in the grips of the police. The host side will need to wipe out that image from their mentality and focus on getting a win against a traveling Elmina Sharks team who are hungry to pick up points away from home.

The sharks were not as fearsome against Dreams FC after settling for a draw at home with the Dawu side. A response is needed against one of the most promising sides in the league. An away trip is not an enticing prospect and yet, the hosts are clamouring for win due to what happened in their last game which resulted in a loss. Away from home, the sharks have drawn 3 times and lost 2 times.

LEGON CITIES vs KARELA

Legon Cities have won 3 games in their last four matches in the GPL (L1), after not being able to win a single match in their first 7 matches. Their change in fortunes on the field has led them to rise on the table to 14th. After narrowly winning the tense ‘Accra New Boys Derby’ last weekend, their next match provides them another herculean tasks to continue their steady rise in the table. Facing League Leaders Karela United, Legon Cities must be disciplined on the field to be able to come out of this match with at least a point.

League leaders, Karela United picked up an impressive 10 points in the month of January. Surprisingly, Karela’s two losses in the league have come in their fixtures away from home. This gives all indication that their opponents have a chance in this match if they take their chances. But after a win and a draw in their previous two matches, they will be seeking to keep their unbeaten run going. With just a three-point lead over Bechem United, Karela will be looking to grab a win to strengthen their grip at the top of the League.

MEDEAMA vs HEARTS OF OAK

The Yellow and Mauves were mellowed by two goals against the league leaders, Karela United. That result has left them out of the top ten places and seven points off the top of the table. As a team with title-winning ambitions, there is a need to respond. A victory against Hearts will definitely be a tonic booster for their title ambitions. With two wins and a draw from their last three home games, they will be poised for a win come Wednesday February 3, 2021.

The phobians are reeling from their derby defeat against Olympics over the weekend. A test at the Akoon Park is the last thing they would have wished for. That notwithstanding, the defeat should galvanize them to pick themselves up. There were close shaves against Olympics but the critical concern was the lack of killer instinct which was conspicuously missing on Saturday.
