GPL 2020/2021 MATCH DAY 14 PREVIEWS

WAFA vs ASHGOLD

Two seeming title hopefuls in WAFA and Ashgold have for the last few weeks seen a dry spell of form which has sunk both deeper down the table and are separated by a single point in 8th and 9th respectively. WAFA have recorded a solitary win in 5 while the miners have gone winless within that same period. The Sogakope Park will play host to these sides in a GPL matchday 14 fixture. WAFA who are yet to lose at home will be buoyed by the fact that they host Ashgold this week after losing successive games on the road. The Sogakope lads have scored a whopping 18 goals at home; the most by any home team and have shipped 9 in as well, another chart they top. They will require a quick defensive redress to salvage any little title hopes left. Augustine Boakye who has been called up to the Black Stars initial 32-man squad will be his team’s focal point in the creativity room.

Obuasi Ashgold have been extremely poor since mid-January.  After 2 straight wins to kick off 2021 they’ve gone on a drought of no wins in 5 games. Their supposedly good signings who replaced the lot sold have begun to quickly diminish in returns and the damning effects of a host of player sales are beginning to tell. In post especially, they have rotated consistently due to numerous goalkeeping errors being their bane. Veteran forward Hans Kwofie seems to have been caught up with aging legs after he began the campaign with a bang. Captivating young talent Yaw Annor has also gone under the radar with several inconsistent performances. Coach Milovan Cirkovic has hinted in squad improvement and might snap up one or two additions to bolster his squad. It will come with a lot of miracle if the Aboakese take any point away at WAFA.

BEREKUM CHELSEA vs ELEVEN WONDERS

Berekum Chelsea will look to continue their unbeaten home record this season as they host an inconsistent Eleven Wonders side. After coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Elmina Sharks on match day 13, the Blues are poised to build on that to secure a win and 3 points in this first official match between these two sides in the Ghana Premier league competition. The Golden City Park has always been a tough place for visiting teams, as Berekum Chelsea has so far in the season recorded no loss, 3 wins and 3 draws with 3 clean sheets in the process. The former league champions will put up a spirited performance against an Eleven Wonders side which is yet to win an away match this season.

Eleven Wonders have a big test on their hands in this fixture. They have an unimpressive away record of 3 loses and 3 draws with no clean sheet in the league so far. They only sit one place above Berekum Chelsea although they are tied on the same points. Only goal difference separates the two sides. After suffering a painful 2-0 loss to Dreams FC in their last match which they played at home, they are yet to win in their last 3 matches played. Coach Ignatius and his boys are indeed faced with a tough test in this match as they travel to one of the most feared venues for any visiting team in the Ghana Premier league and need a response, after it was rumoured that they have just lost Ibrahim Salifu to Hearts of Oak.

LIBERTY vs INTER ALLIES

The not so scientific soccer lads this campaign sprung a huge surprise with an away win at Obuasi last time out and topped it with a rare away clean sheet. A huge morale booster going into ‘a relegation dogfight fixture’ with seemingly doomed Inter Allies. That win ended a run of 5 games without a victory and cooled the hot waters at the Dansoman based boys’ camp. Their woeful run seems to have all been suddenly forgotten while their next game could send them up to 13th and further away from the drop if they can beat the ‘11 is to 1’ boys. This fixture will be played at the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park. Captain George Amoako’s return from a failed transfer abroad has been vital to Liberty’s resurgence. In his 2 games back, they have kept successive clean sheets and ended their 3 games losing streak. Both he and Kwaku Karikari were largely instrumental in that win at Obuasi.

International Allies are still licking their wounds over the departure of talismanic men Victorien Adebayor and Samuel Armah. They have never fully recovered. The ‘11 is to 1’ boys have recorded a woeful 2 wins all season, with 1 draw and 10 loses in company. They have lost 6 straight games scoring just once during that time adding up to the meagre 4 goals all season. A form reminiscent of an already relegated side. The Accra based side have thus brought in reinforcement during the second transfer window by signing Nigerian forwards Sunday Kalu and Kingsley Kuku. In addition, former Asante Kotoko Centre back, Emmanuel Agyeman Badu has also joined the outfit to reignite the course of surviving another season. Away at Dansoman will be no easy feat especially after having lost all games on the road. The last time Inter allies visited the said venue, they won. This could be feisty.

MEDEAMA vs BECHEM UNITED

Medeama have dropped down the league table after some uninspiring performances in their previous matches. Their shocking away loss to King Faisal in Match Day 13 was another appalling performance we did not see coming. They host Bechem United whose amazing performances have gone under the radar this season.

Bechem United are in buoyant move after defeating dark horses Great Olympics at home. They are a balanced team with an Entertaining attack but a leaky defense which will be their downfall if they plan to contend for the title this season. With just a point behind league leaders, Bechem United can continue their fairytale story this season in the league and claim a point away from home.

DREAMS vs ADUANA

The believers are enjoying a formidable run of form since the turn of the year. They are unbeaten in their last seven games and have scored fifteen goals in those seven games – more than two goals per game. The acquisitions at the beginning of the season are surely proving to be of essence toward the survival of the Dawu-based side. In former Hearts of Oak forward Joseph Esso, they did not only procure a lethal striker but also, a leader in several ways. He has held the arm band at certain times this season and his leadership will be called upon against a fearless Aduana side.

The fire boys are sitting pretty in fifth place after recording 3 wins in their last five games. Their narrow 1-0 against WAFA proved that they can lock up their defence and use the counter attacking strategy with players like Samuel Bioh on their squad. The Theatre of Dreams will present a different challenge as Dreams will seek to remain unbeaten even in their own back yard.

EBUSUA DWARFS vs KARELA UNITED

Ebusua dwarfs have won two games on the bounce for the first time this season. They defeated Inter Allies in their own backyard in game week 13 by 2 goals to nil. The mysterious boys will be aiming to keep the good run of form going. Karela united will provide a tough test for the Cape Coast boys but their desperation to return to winning ways could play into the hands of Dwarfs.

Two goals from Kumasi Asante Kotoko were enough to end Karela’s 64 game unbeaten home record in game week 13. The result leaves them 2nd on the league table. Karela will be out for blood in their next match. Coach Evans Adotey will have to motivate his boys to make a quick return to victory to keep them in the title chase. Karela have enjoyed playing against dwarfs as they have won 3 out of the 4 matches played between the two.

LEGON CITIES vs KING FAISAL

What a turnaround Coach Bashir Hayford has masterminded with Legon Cities. After sitting at the bottom of the league from the beginning of the season, their fortunes have turned in their previous four games. They have won two matches and drawn two matches. These performances involve drawing against Accra Hearts of Oak and disgracing Ashgold at Home. Up next, they face a King Faisal side who are still finding their feet in the league.

King Faisal, with a meagre 3 wins from 13 matches played and 6 defeats tells the story of a team struggling to punch above their weight in the league. This team is in dire need of inspiration from their Technical staff and playing body to turn the tide of their season. Coming up against a rejuvenated and in form Legon Cities, this task ahead King Faisal looks difficult to achieve within the shortest possible time.

GREAT OLYMPICS vs ELMINA SHARKS

Accra Great Olympics will come up against Elmina Sharks in game week 14. Olympics derby delight over their archrivals Hearts of Oak was brought to a low as they suffered an away defeat at the hands of Bechem united in game week 13. The Dade boys will have to put the defeat behind them and find their mojo back. Olympics have the knack to bounce back after defeats and go on amazing runs and Elmina Sharks who have not won an away game will be the perfect opponent for them.

Elmina sharks were held at home by Berekum Chelsea in game week 13. The result leaves them 11th on the league table with 17 points. The previous game between the two sides ended in a one all draw. Elmina sharks have not won an away game this season with their best results being draws. The lads from Elmina will have to be at their best if they are to take anything away from this match.
