The Minority in Parliament wants the Employment and Labour Minister, Ignatius Baffour Awuah to be invited to the House to provide details on employment figures in the country.
According to the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, the figures will help ascertain the true extent of the impact of COVID-19 on employment and related matters.
Speaking in the House, Haruna Iddrisu said the issue is urgent as legislators must be fully aware of the financial and economic impact of COVID-19.
“The Minister for Employment will have to come and update the House on the impact of COVID-19 on employment [in Ghana] and the measures the government is taking to support distressed industries and companies. We haven’t seen any program for that purpose. We need to know the real economic and financial impact of COVID-19 on employment in Ghana,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu says the Minister was ready to furnish the House with that information, but was put on hold because the information wasn’t complete.
He said the Minister is expected to provide the House with the information before it goes on recess later this month.
Ghana’s economy, like many others the world over, has been hit by the impact of the pandemic, compelling many firms to lay off workers.
The ban on public gatherings has led to a massive downturn in activities in sectors like hospitality and leisure.
Some have already laid off casual workers and are preparing to cut down on permanent staff.
The three-week lockdown also led to a slowdown in economic activities in Ghana’s main economic hubs.
