The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced it will begin a nationwide issuance of cards to over 3 million Ghanaians from Monday June 8 in all 16 regions.

According to the Authority, the exercise will be carried out until Tuesday, June 16.

It estimates that when the 3,875,441 printed cards are issued, an estimated 11,062,850 Ghanaians will have their Ghana Cards to enable them not only vouch for other Ghanaians to register for theirs, but also for purposes such as registering as a voter and vouching for others.

A statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs of the Authority, ACI Francis Palmdeti, on Friday indicated that a total of 5,635 distribution centres will be set up across the regions for the card issuance.

Two days after this exercise, the Authority has scheduled a nationwide mop-up registration exercise, expected to end mid-September, to enable those who could not register to do so.

“The NIA will provide adequate PPEss for all NIA field officials for use during the exercise.

“All Registration Centres will be equipped with the requisite resources to ensure the effective observance of all prescribed health and safety protocols.

“In addition, security personnel will be deployed at each Registration Centre to ensure that crowd control measures such as physical distancing and appointment system are strictly observed.

“Applicants attending at NIA card collection centres MUST wear a mask and wash their hands before they begin the card collection process.”
