Nursing mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their babies for 1,000 days.

Health Affairs

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Community Health Groups trained to promote proper breastfeeding, Dr. Justice Ofori Amoah, Sekyere East District Health Director, said proper exclusive breastfeeding is vital.

Clearly, he highlighted that the first 1,000 days are a period of rapid developmental growth. This is where physical, mental, and, cognitive development takes place. This period refers to the infant life from birth until they reach two years.

He urges all nursing mothers to strictly devote themselves to exclusive breastfeeding of their newborn babies after birth to promote their well-being and healthy growth.

He added that parents that thwart exclusive breastfeeding do not only risk the babies but the family as well because they both experiences health and economic effects.

He, therefore, beseech parents in the Sekyere East District to cooperate with the community health volunteers to make the common cause of the exercise a success.

Mr. Joshua Baidoo, Regional Operations Manager for World Vision International in Ghana added that the volunteers’ health groups have been trained and equipped with bicycles to implement the project. Sensitizing nursing mothers on nutritional foods that are best for babies at an early stage is a part of the exercise, he said.
