Articles Business Opportunities Health Affairs

Coconut water has, in recent times, become a sought after and trendy beverage in Ghana due to its health benefits and refreshing nature. Most people have taken to consuming coconut water after lunch or sometimes even before breakfast. It has also become a  preferred choice such that no occasion goes by without you noticing coconut presence.

The sudden interest has made the fruit (coconut) experience a hike in price compared to its former cost in previous years. In the past, with just GH 1.00 one could purchase coconut, but due to increase in demand, the price has marginally increased over time, with the fruit sometimes selling at GH 2.00 per one depending on the size and the least price tagged at GH 1.50p. That is, the cost from buying from a roadside vendor, however, if you happen to find yourself in a restaurant where the fruit is all glammed up with a bent straw and paper parasol, the price is definitely going to be higher.

On would question the crave behind its consumption. Well, Coconut water has been regarded as a miracle drink by many. It is one of the best drinks to combat the summer heat and serves as a powerful natural sports drink for an instant energy boost. It is low in calories and contains natural enzymes and minerals like potassium that make it a super drink. While it is good to sip on fresh coconut water any time of the day, drinking it at the right time can double the health benefits that you can derive.

If you are looking for an appropriate time to take in coconut water, well there is no perfect time for it, however, drinking it early morning on an empty stomach can help in many ways. Coconut water contains lauric acid, which helps in boosting your immunity, kick-starting your metabolism and facilitating weight loss.

The several benefits of coconut water also help fight fatigue and exhaustion, help with quick digestion, and prevent bloating after a meal.

It is also a good source of several nutrients that may have antioxidant properties, benefits against diabetes, helps prevent kidney stones, supports heart health, reduces blood pressure, beneficial after prolonged exercise and a delicious source of hydration which makes it a healthier drink and definitely a preferred choice as a result of the many nutritional benefits.

Takoradi has also seen this rapid taste for coconut water, and this has made it a popular business venture. I can confidently say that in every vicinity in Takoradi there is one or more coconut selling point.

It is, therefore, no surprise that the Sekondi- Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly(STMA) chose coconut for the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program since the plant has many uses ranging from coconut oil, coconut drink, flour, broomsticks, ropes among others, which adds to the economic gains of the Assembly and the country as a whole.

The sale of coconut has become a thriving business in most parts of the country, including Sekondi – Takoradi, so when looking for a profitable business to invest in, consider the coconut trend.
