Common Mistakes students make in graduate school application – Part 1

Education

I know you so badly want to get into your dream school. Or get that scholarship. Or fit into a new learning environment abroad. How do you start realising this dream? By putting in a strong and compelling application!

Sending a strong application to your preferred university/college and program is one step to getting into grad school. Some students make mistakes which affect their chances of gaining admission. You don’t want to be one of them, do you?  I will list 5 common mistakes students make in their application which you should avoid!

# 1. Applying on the deadline

You should not wait to send your application on the deadline. Most students are fond of starting their application late which makes them rush in their submission. You want to be able to read through your documents thoroughly, ensure that your essays are well written, your recommenders have sent in their letters and you have met all requests for your application. Also, sending in your application early helps you read over your documents to check grammatical errors or questions you have not answered before you finally submit.

#2. Omitting some questions in your application

For an application to be successful, you should be able to answer all the questions asked. You should not answer some and leave the rest. This is why you should be very prepared before you start your application. Some students do not provide all documents because they do not have them. The school you are applying to believes you have all documents before starting your application. Read all the requests before starting your application. Make sure you answer all questions!

#3. Not following instructions

You have to read all the instructions very well before you begin with your application. Know what a school wants from you to process your admission before you apply. If you are applying for a scholarship or visa, be careful you follow all the guide/directions in filling your application. Do not ignore any instruction, otherwise your application will be rejected.

#4. Copying and Pasting answers

I have realized that most students dislike writing essays or motivation letters which is one major requirement when applying to school. To have the easy way, some students search on the internet for sample essays and copy and paste when writing theirs. This is wrong and will affect your application. You have to make sure that whatever information you put in your application, represents you and all documents you submit. Recruiters want to know who you are to determine your chance of gaining that admission and winning that scholarship. You don’t want to lose your opportunity of entering graduate school if you do not put in the hard work.

#5. Applying to the wrong program

Sadly, some students apply to the wrong program without taking the time to read in-depth about a program and whether he or she is suitable for that program. Some students rush to choose a program because they either want to go to a particular school or because the program is nice to them . You have to ask questions from students, lecturers, alumni or faculty heads from the school you are applying to, about the program you are interested in. This will help you determine whether choosing that program is good for you and whether you will be able to get good grades at the end of your graduate studies. Make sure you also read more about your program choice and have alternative options to choose from.
