Personnel of the Revenue Asset and Border Protection Unit of the Office of the President on Friday arrested Prince Kafui Wosoryie, a man with no fixed address, suspected to be a fake national security operative, in Sogakope, in the Volta Region.
The suspect allegedly posed as a representative of the President for several months and succeeded in taking huge sums of money from unsuspecting members of the public with false job offers.
Wosoryie was also said to have stopped vehicles and carried out searches on them on highways in various parts of the country, and demanded money from the occupants.
Mr Robert Tetteyfio Adjase, Leader of the unit, disclosed these to the ‘Ghanaian Times’ in Sogakope at the weekend.
He said that the suspect was nabbed with assistance from the Sogakope police when he turned up at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) barriers in the town to introduce himself as an appointee of the President assigned to ‘deal with’ customs and immigration officers at their duty posts.Latest News In Ghana. According to Mr Adjase, the suspect ferociously resisted arrest, injured one policeman and left the officer bleeding profusely before he was finally handcuffed.
He said that a search on Wosoryie revealed a fake national security identity card and a pair of handcuffs.
At the time of filing this report, Mr Adjase said that Wosoryie was in custody at the Sogakope District Police Station.
He stated that during interrogation, Wosoryie insisted that he was an envoy of President Akufo-Addo, who also issued and signed his identity card.
Mr Adjase said the suspect would soon be processed for court, and warned that any unruly person who would use the name of the President or any state institution to indulge in criminal activities in the countdown to the general elections would suffer swift and ruthless consequences.
