Police Grab AK47 Rifle At NDC PC’s Office, 3 Others Arrested Over Savelugu Shooting

The Northern Regional Police Comander, DCOP Timothy Yoosa Bonga, has revealed that the regional security task force conducted a search at the office of the NDC parliamentary candidate for Savelugu, Alhaji Yakubu Iddris Abdulai’s office as part of investigations into the shooting incident and retrieved an AK47 rifle with two magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunitions.

At a press briefing in Tamale, the police commander said the police also retrieved another AK47 rifle loaded with 40 rounds of ammunitions and 21 additional ammunitions and one round of G3 rifle ammunition from the residence of 60 year old Duko Naa Mohammed Ahmed, a chief of Duko in Savelugu.

The police boss indicated that the team also arrested one Alhassan Dawuda, 30 year old and Mohammed Fadila, 27 year old for being in possession of firearm.

“Mohammed Fadila was however granted bail on grounds of ill health, the other is in custody.”

DCOP Bonga however hinted that the NDC parliamentary candidate, Alhaji Yakubu Iddris Abdulai is yet to report to the police adding that police will take all the necessary steps to arrest him should he fail to report himself.

“The shooting incident is still under investigations and we appeal to all who have credible information to make it available to the police. It’s important to note that AK47 rifles are not sold to individuals and therefore our investigations will extend to the sources of the two rifles and ammunitions retrieved. Police will make other enquirers including forensic examination to come to the conclusion of the case we assure the public of transparent, fair and firm application of the rules.”
The shooting incident in the Savelugu constituency resulted in the death of a 12-year old girl with three persons sustaining severe injuries.

The parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Savelugu constituency, Abdul-Samed Gunu,bhas however instructed his lawyers to commence legal process at the Tamale High court over the parliamentary elections in the constituency.

The Incumbent Member of Parliament for the Savelugu constituency is seeking to overturn the declaration of results in favor of the NDC parliamentary candidate, Alhaji Yakubu Iddris Abdulai by the ElectoralCommission in the just ended parliamentary elections.

The NDC candidate , Alhaji Yakubu Iddris Abdulai obtained 19,577 votes as against incumbent MP, Abdul-Samed Gunu of the NPP who polled 19,478 votes.

The declaration of results of the parliamentary election for the Savelugu constituency delayed for days over misunderstandings between the NPP and NDC over a ballot box the NPP claimed there was over voting at the D/A Primary Ying from one of the polling stations in the constituency.

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party in the constituency have refused to accept the declaration of the results in favor of the NDC candidate.

They claimed that there was over voting at the D/A Primary Ying polling station hence the result at that polling station should have been nullified in lines with the laws of Ghana.

The NPP supporters said they would not resort to violence on the declaration but will not recognize the NDC parliamentary candidate as the winner of the parliamentary election in the Savelugu constituency.
