His Excellency Akufo-Addo says the teacher licensure examination is a step in the right direction to improve standards and upgrade the dignity of the teaching profession, hence his commitment to retain the licensure exams.
This was announced by the Central Regional Minister, Mr Kwamena Duncan in a speech read on behalf of President Nana Akufo-Addo on October 5, 2020 at this years Ghana Teacher Prize Day in Cape Coast.
Akufo-Addo in the address said “If we are to elevate the dignity of the teaching profession, as we must, then it stands to reason that we must guard the gates jealously and ensure that robust standards are met before a person can call himself or herself a teacher and enter the classroom to teach,”
This the President said would help teachers acquire skills, knowledge, values and attitudes to meet national and international teaching standards to deliver effectively in schools.
The Central Regional Minister noted President Nana Akufo-Addo in collaboration with the Norwegian Teacher Initiative (NTI) was developing a comprehensive teacher policy through the Ghana Teacher Taskforce.
“The project seeks the welfare, conditions of service, professional growth of teachers and other support mechanisms to enable them to compete globally and significantly to “influence the way teachers are trained, live their lives, grow in the profession, and attain learning outcomes”, the Minister stated
According to Nana Akufo-Addo “It is only a crop of well-trained, self-confident and contented teachers who can deliver the educated and skilled workforce we require to transform our economy”.
