Angry youth attack Akatsi police over the death of a suspect in custody

A group of angry young men attacked the Akatsi Police Station with stones, bottles and also threatened to burn down the place last Friday, November 5th, 2021.

This follows the death of a suspect, Etornam Avulekpor. Etornam was arrested by the police the previous day for possessing 64 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.

Also, the police found in the possession of the suspect number of cellular phones believed to be stolen. According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, Public Affairs Officer of the Volta Regional Police Command, Etornam Avulekpor fell ill while in police custody and was rushed to Hoggar Clinic in Akatsi for treatment.

“The suspect was later referred to Ho Teaching Hospital later in the day,” said DSP Tenge

The youth with much anger stormed the police station with lorry tyres and gallons of petrol, threatening to set the place on fire while throwing stones and bottles about when they heard the news of Avulekpor’s death.

DSP Tenge said it took the timely intervention of a reinforced team of officers from the Tongu Police Division to avert the catastrophe.

She said an autopsy was set to be performed on the body of the deceased to establish the cause of the death.

Meanwhile, Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Edward Kwateng has given the assurance that the cause of the suspect’s death would be investigated meticulously, saying: “We shall definitely get to the bottom of the matter”

The Deputy Volta Regional Police Commander ACP Boadu Ekumah and the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Kofitse Nyahe have visited the bereaved families.
