GPL 2020/2021 MATCH DAY 30 PREVIEWS

Sports

KOTOKO VS KARELA

The porcupine warriors are at home at Obuasi to Ainyinase based Karela United. This affords Coach Baretto’s boys the opportunity to jump to the top of the table before the crucial national derby against Hearts of Oak on Sunday. Notable inclusions are that of Felix Annan, the skipper who has been displaced. Kotoko are spoilt for choice in the goalkeeping department and will ensure that the department is always filled properly. Their record upfront has been miserly to say the least. Even eleventh placed Bechem United have scored one more goal than Kotoko. Their defence is their weapon and hopefully, it should hold a wounded Karela back.

The Westerners have had to deal with a nasty hooliganism case hanging around their necks, after their defeat to their city rivals, Medeama SC in the MTN FA Cup. The Crosby Awuah Memorial Park has been banned. To make matters worse, they must travel to face the opposition who handed them their first home defeat this season. Spirits will have to be lifted to give them any chance in this crucial encounter. Karela have nothing to lose. The opportunity to close the gap on Kotoko, who are a place above them and 7 points away should inspire them to seek to get something out of this game.

BEREKUM CHELSEA VS ELMINA SHARKS

Both teams are tied on the same points and are only two points away from the relegation zone. A loss for any team will see them drop to that zone.

Berekum Chelsea are known to sparkle when they play at home and so far, have suffered only one home defeat all season, when they hosted WAFA in match week 22. Their enviable home record has not been enough to place them on a comfortable spot on the table. Coach Hoffman and his boys must avoid defeat at all cost in this all important match.

Elmina Sharks have their destiny in their hands in this crucial away fixture. The league is only four match days away from completion after this fixture, and it’s a make or break for the “Fearsome Sharks” from Elmina. They are poor travelers and have never won an away fixture all season. Coach Odartey Lamptey and his team can only hope and pray that “the god of football” will smile at them in this fixture.

OLYMPICS VS BECHEM UNITED

Olympics will face off with Bechem united in a game week 30 encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Dade Boys lost by a goal to nil to King Faisal in game week 29. With the season almost over, Olympics can ill afford to lose momentum now if they want to end the season on a high note. Coach Annor Walker’s boys have been impressive this season and have lived up to the billing as dark horses of the league. Coming up against Bechem United, Olympics can be sure to bounce back after their shock defeat in game week 29.

Bechem United will have to be defensively resolute as they come up against an Olympics team with a good home record. Bechem will be worried as they cannot boast about a good away record. They are without a win in their last 5 away matches. This fixture might just be a walk in the park for Olympics.

DREAMS FC VS ELEVEN WONDERS

Dawu-based Dreams FC play hosts to Techiman Eleven Wonders in a cagey encounter where both teams need the win to avoid losing ground on their nearest opponents on the league log. Dreams fought hard for a draw against WAFA in their last game and return to the venue of their 2-0 win against Elmina Sharks, two game weeks ago. Vladislav Viric will have to watch the game from anywhere but the dugout, as he serves a ban placed on him by the Disciplinary Committee.

Eleven Wonders have been toggling between relegation and safety: a precarious position to be in. this tough fixture does not lessen the pressure in any way. Their adverse goal difference of minus 8 as against their opponents plus 13 means that they cannot be all-expansive in Dawu. Their best bet is to use counter attacks to threaten the obvious offensive ambition which will be on display by Dreams FC.

WAFA VS ADUANA

The Red Bull Arena will host a match day 30 encounter of the GPL between two mightily close opponents in WAFA and Aduana Stars. Both clubs are locked on 43 points each with goal difference giving the guests an edge on the league log in 7th position.

Wafa have maintained a balance in the past few months, recording all sorts of results but most importantly topping them majorly with victories. During this run, the Sogakope boys have stayed in the top 8 and never looked back after having a relegation scare right before that run. It is of no surprise that again, their gaffer, Dr Prosper Ogum has been nominated as coach of the month for May. Talisman and creator in chief, Augustine Boakye after signing for Austrian side Wolfsberger AC will look to put an immense shine on his last 5 appearances for the academy side before he departs, starting this midweek against Aduana Stars.

Two straight wins in all competitions and a place in the round of 16 of the FA Cup places Aduana Stars in a morale boosting position in going all out in this fixture.  It has been just two away wins all season for the Ogya Boys who have missed the services of spearhead Yahaya Mohammed through a long injury lay off. Though Sam Adams has stepped in with a couple of goals, results have been topsy turvy. The Dormaa based side have come up with some important results in the past in this fixture. In their last visit, they came away with an impressive win which could serve as grounds on building dominance at the dreaded venue.

MEDEAMA SC VS KING FAISAL FC

Medeama failed to pick at least a point in their match against league leaders Hearts of Oak on Match Day 29. Although the match got the hype it deserved, it was a one way show for the Rainbow Guys as Medeama failed to come to the party. Despite the inconsistency in their winning streak, Medeama sit at 4th position with 46 points; just a point above Top 4 chasers, Dreams Fc and Olympics. The Mauve and Yellow Army take a trip back home from Anyinase after successfully eliminating their regional rival Karela from the FA cup competition.

King Faisal Fc find themselves in an uncomfortable position in the league table. Despite being 17th on the league table, there is still some hope for survival if they should get good results in the remaining five matches. Just six points separates them from Legon Cities who are currently 9th on the league table, thus making it difficult to mark any team for relegation. Medeama will be looking forward to fight for all three points at home. With the Super Clash on Sunday, Medeama will hope to grab all three points in their next two games as they look forward for either Hearts or Kotoko to drop points on Sunday.

EBUSUA DWARFS VS INTER ALLIES

It will be an exciting encounter as Ebusua Dwarfs host inter allies in a game week 30 match up.  Both teams are the relegation zone and will be desperate for a win in this match. Dwarfs defeated Inter Allies in the first half of the season and will be aiming at doing the double over them this season. Every point will count for dwarfs if they have any intentions of staying in the league.

Inter Allies will feel hard done by after losing in the way they did. They will take lots of positives from the match and hope they are able to replicate such performance against Dwarfs. Losing this match will not be an option for them since the lie bottom of the league table with 26 points. Both teams will go all out in this match as there is a lot at stack.

LIBERTY VS ASHGOLD

With 5 games left of the season to climax, it’s all or nothing for Liberty Professionals who have battled all season long trying to escape the clutches of relegation. Try as they may, they’ve been stuck there for weeks, out 1 one matchday, back in the next. Since adopting the Red Bull Arena, they’ve only dropped points twice and against top 4 sides in 6 games, underlining their potent force at Sogakope. They now face Ashantigold who lie below mid table  in 10th and look to have survived another season. This could be incentive enough for the host to capitalize on gaining 3 vital points.

Ashantigold themselves haven’t been the usual force to reckon with in the past few seasons. This season has been no different, with fans raging at player performances and managerial changes by the club. Their many transfers this season has really counted for very little winning them just a single game on the road and with a paltry 2 clean sheets to go with in 15 attempts.

Liberty Professionals run away with all 3 points in the first round in a surprising win at the Lenclay Stadium, and with time running out for Coach Andy Sinason and his charges, it’s a must win and nothing more.

LEGON CITIES VS HEARTS OF OAK

Legon Cities have been able to turn their season around after they begun the second round with a string of abysmal results. Currently sitting 9th on the table, and six points away from victory, they can confidently say they have retained their premier league status for next season. The Accra based side, have won their last three matches at home with ease but this streak will come under threat when Accra Hearts of Oak visit them in Match Day 30 of the Ghana Premier League. Can they keep the Phobians at bay and salvage at least a draw in this fixture?

Accra Hearts of Oak are five games away from winning their first league title in over a decade. Their next two fixtures against Legon Cities and bitter rivals, Asante Kotoko are two major hurdles they must overcome perfectly if they want to break the jinx and finally win the League title. Four wins in their last five games is impressive for a side aspiring to finish the season strongly by winning the title. To crown it all, 53 points accumulated after 29 matches shows the determination of the Phobians to finally fulfill their greatest desire of lifting the League trophy yet again. This matchup will serve as the penultimate match for Hearts of Oak ahead of the Super Clash on Sunday against Kotoko. With the form and ruthlessness the Phobians have shown in their recent games, they are tipped to get closer to being crowned league champions after this fixture.
