Virtual Plays -The ‘New Normal’ for Creatives

Entertainment

Before the new normal, we lived in the normal times of going to the cinemas to watch a movie or to the theaters to watch a play while eating your  popcorn and laughing your hearts out. Performing artists feed off the energy and smiles from their audience to cause an exciting atmosphere with their dazzling craft. This created a happy space for both artists and their audience.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought a new twist with the  ‘new normal’ with various restrictions which people have to comply with. Selling  tickets for events means selling only half of the normal capacity an auditorium can contain in keeping with social distancing which is causing financial loss to investors in the art industry. And as the days go by, the restrictions for organizing events get stricter.  Some performing artists are faced with the option of canceling their shows or postponing until things get better.  The creative space for events is not lucrative for some artists in this Covid-19 situation.

However, other creatives  have embraced the ‘new normal’ and are making good use of it. They have been able to leverage digital platforms to bring back laughter and excitement to their audience. One of such platforms is Youtube. Theatre, poetry and music lovers subscribe to channels to watch the works of artists at the comfort of their homes. One of such artists is a young man called Yussif Markstar who is using his Youtube channel to entertain his audience using drama.

The Youtube channel was created as a platform for actors, actresses, spoken word artists, singers and dancers to showcase their gifts/talents and entertain their audience. Creative director and content creator Yussif Markstar, is set to debut his first three cast virtual play titled ‘Peace On Hold’. This will be live streamed on his Youtube Channel this, Sunday 14 March, 2021 at 6:30pm. The play features two amazing musicians: Naana Asiedu and Joel Degadzor and the third cast is Yussif Markstar who is also the playwright of this play. The director for the play is Betty Asamoah.

When asked why this virtual play, Yussif Markstar said:

“This play is set to entertain and educate people on the importance of trust in marriages. It is a musical, comic and romantic play you will enjoy and I am also much concerned about the message it communicates”.

Yussif Markstar said this is one of the greatest things from his camp and others. He is bent on accepting the ‘new normal’ and making good use of his Youtube Channel in reaching his audience.
