GPL 2020/2021 MATCH DAY 13 PREVIEWS

INTER ALLIES vs EBUSUA DWARFS

Disheveled Inter Allies, who are rooted at the bottom of the Ghana Premier League table will welcome Cape Coast based Ebusua Dwarfs. The latter registered their first win in nine years in their last outing against Liberty Professionals. Inter Allies have scored just one goal in their last five games, all of which ended in defeat. Their dependence on Victorien Adebayor, who left a gaping hole in attack is now coming back to bite them.

Dwarfs are in high spirits and have climbed up the league log after their historic win at Dansoman. The fashion in which that win was recorded is worthy of mention. They clawed their way back after going down by a goal. Their performance in that game, which was their second away win of the season was commendable and they will regard a struggling Inter Allies side as one opportunity to grab maximum points.

BECHEM UNITED vs OLYMPICS

This fixture between two top 4 placed teams will be nothing short of exciting.

Bechem United are yet to lose at home this season as they host Olympics who have lost only twice in an away fixture. Bechem themselves are yet to lose at home and are bent on keeping this record intact. Although they have won only one game in their last five, the team comes alive anytime they play at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park. Some inconsistent results made them drop from the top of the table as they briefly occupied that spot. Coach Danso needs a good strategy to stop a very stubborn Olympics side who will stop at nothing to punish them for any mistakes.

Accra Great Olympics have been tipped as the dark horses of the 2020/21 GPL by many for their impressive performances and style of play. It is no fluke that they have recorded wins over Kotoko and their “noisy” neighbors Hearts of Oak. They have lost only once in their last five games and do not look out of steam as they travel to Bechem. The team currently being coached by Yaw Preko and Olympics legend Godwin Atttam has seen a fresh strategy in tactics and performance. The likes of captain Gladson Awako and the Abbey Brothers in the team is always a threat to their opponents in every match. Olympics are poised to hand Bechem their first home defeat of the season.

ASHGOLD vs LIBERTY PROFESSIONALS

After picking up a valuable point against city rivals Asante Kotoko in the Ashanti derby in Match day 11, AshantiGold suffered a shock loss to Ebusua Dwarfs in their recent encounter in the league. Up next for the Obuasi based side is a clash against Liberty Professionals. A home match presents a perfect opportunity to AshantiGold to return to winning ways and climb back up the table after dropping to 8th position due to some bad results in their previous games. The only downside of this team is that their defence has not toughened up yet to limit goal scoring opportunities from teams they face. Once they can reduce the cheap goals they concede in games, they may be a contender for one of the top 4 places at the end of the season.

The Scientific soccer lads begun the league with so much promise but all confidence within their attackers has dwindled. They have not scored a goal in the last two matches in the league and boast a meagre two wins in the league and sitting 16th on the league table, this is not a performance befitting of one of the ‘Giants’ in the Ghana Premier League history. This sleeping giant must wake from its slumber and start performing within their capabilities and play amazing football to win points. Unfortunately, their road to redeeming their glorified image may have to delay by a week as they face an AshantiGold side who may be hungrier for the three points at stake in the game.

KARELA vs KOTOKO

Karela United will match up against Asante Kotoko in game week 13. Arguably the biggest match of the game week as 1st place meets 3rd place. Karela are still top of the table after dropping points away at Legon Cities in game week 12. The previous match between the two sides ended in an away victory for the Kotoko. Home advantage will be one factor Karela will look to take advantage of as they have not lost at home this season.

The porcupine warriors will have to put in their best performance as they come up against the league leaders. Kotoko have managed 5 goals away this season and will need to improve if they are to take anything away from this match. Kotoko beat Inter Allies in game week 12 by a lone goal and this will do their confidence a whole lot of good. Out of the 3 previous matches played Kotoko has won on two occasions with the latest being an away victory in the 2019/2020 season and a similar result is what they will be want. Will the team with the best defensive record this season prove to be a problem for the league leaders?

ELEVEN WONDERS vs DREAMS FC

Dreams FC are next to visit Techiman as they face Eleven Wonders in Match day 13. After holding Elmina Sharks to a goalless draw in their last home match, Eleven Wonders will be aiming to keep yet another clean sheet in this match to build momentum ahead of their upcoming games. But this will be a difficult task against a Dreams FC side who scored 16goals so far in the league.

Dreams FC extend their unbeaten run to 6 games after defeating WAFA by three goals in their previous match in the Ghana Premier League. Traveling away from home in their next encounter, they will be in buoyant mood to pick up all three points in their next game. Dream FC are yet to taste a defeat in the league this year. All signs show that they will extend their unbeaten run against Eleven Wonders.

ADUANA STARS vs WAFA

Sixth placed Aduana host 5th placed WAFA in a dicey encounter in Dormaa. The hosts have recorded 2 wins and 2 draws in their last 4 games. Head coach Paa Kwesi Fabin has advocated for an increase in his squad size to augment the current team. His assertion is based on the fact that the search for quality throughout the season is something which cannot be foregone. Samuel Bioh, who got the winner against Kotoko, as well as Bright Adjei need to be providing as much support as possible for their evergreen poacher Yahya Mohammed.

Coach Prosper Nartey Ogum has superintended a fearsome home form at Sogakope. Away from home, the fear factor is almost non-existent for the academy boys. That has to be corrected working on varying their game away from home. Adapting to the environment is the panacea to their poor away form. Daniel Owusu and Forson Amankwah have had to leave camp for greener pastures. That notwithstanding, captain Abukari Ibrahim will be available to lead the exciting WAFA team.

HEARTS OF OAK vs LEGON CITIES

Hearts of Oak needs to win this match week 13 fixture to lift the huge pressure off the team. The team has not won in their last 3 games and their performance in those last games has been poor. In their last game against Medeama SC which they lost, Coach Papic did admit that there was a problem with his team that needs to be worked on. The return of Emmanuel Nettey and Obeng Jnr from injury has had little impact as the team continues to search for their first win in 3 games. Fans have not hidden their frustration and discontent about the current fortunes of the team. Losing this fixture will not be healthy for the players and the coach as they need to bounce back with a win and maintain consistency if indeed, they want to finish in the top 4 or perhaps win the league.

Legon Cities have found a sudden burst of form and promise, as they have lost just once in their last five games. Coach Bashir Hayford and his boys have vowed not to be the whipping boys after registering solid wins against the likes of WAFA, Ashgold and Inter Allies. They are currently out of the relegation zone and are placed 14th on the log. A good win can send them to 11th on the table. Goal scoring, which seemed to be their problem, seems to have been solved as they have scored 8 goals in their last 5 matches. Meanwhile their opponents have only scored 3 goals in their last five games.

ELMINA SHARKS vs BEREKUM CHELSEA

The Nduom Sports Complex welcome an encounter between hosts, Elmina Sharks and Berekum Chelsea the travelling side. Both teams come into this game sitting below mid table. The former at 10th and the latter at 15th just above the relegation zone. Yaw Acheampong’s charges are one of only 2 teams unbeaten in 5, proving tough to beat. Despite they being hard to break, they’ve returned a single victory in that run, earning them the ‘stalemate experts’ title with 7 draws this season – the highest by any team. They have lacked the required killer instinct to see off games. James Bissue has been in form earning him the player of the month nomination for January. But not just him, rather, the entire team has also missed the services of tricky winger Richard Mpong who still nurses an injury picked up last December.

Berekum Chelsea will be spurred on by their derby win over Bechem United last match day as they approach this game seeking their first back-to-back victory this season. The former champions have been a pale shadow of themselves, battling relegation early on this season and after 12 matchdays, have scored as many goals. At home, where they are usually rock solid, the Bibires remain unbeaten. Frailties have though come to bare away from the Golden City Park, losing 5 out of 6 games and still seeking their first victory. In Gregory Owusu Sekyere, coach Seth Hoffman has found a reliant man between the sticks. After debuting only in week 8, the young goalkeeper has kept 3 clean sheets in 5 games. Likewise, another reliant source will be Paul Atta Agyei who has 3 goals in his last 4 games, will aim at overturning his team’s woes when they visit a turf they’ve lost at in all 2 visits.

KING FAISAL vs MEDEAMA SC

King Faisal are set to put another impressive home spirit as they host Medeama SC. King Faisal’s this season has been their defense. However, scoring is not much of a problem for the team as they proved this by coming from 3 goals down in the first half, to beat Berekum Chelsea 4-3 in their match week 11 fixture. Although this is their only win in their last five games, they show a great deal of promise in their matches whether home or away. Regardless of their performance, they have lost only once at home against Accra Hearts of Oak. This shows their zeal and eagerness to win their matches. A win could briefly lift them out of the relegation zone to allow some respite from their long stay in that dreaded “red” zone.

Medeama can make this their second away win of the season as they travel to play Alhaji Grunsah’s King Faisal side. After securing a 1-0 win against Hearts in Tarkwa in their game prior to this, another win will send a signal to the other teams to watch out for the Tarkwa based club as this could send them to 3rd on the table. Their poor away record however is the only hindrance as they have won only once away from home. Perhaps the likes of Justice Blay who won MVP in their match against Hearts, will put up another of such performance on the day.
